Kayo Shri Gowri lyrics has become a hit with Kannadigas as it is a hymn of devotion. However, the song has a rich background in Karnataka History. The song’s origins can be traced all the way to ” Rendition of 1881″.

Kayo Shri Gowri Lyrics in Kannada and English

The song was the official anthem of the the Kingdom of Mysore under the Wodeyar Dynasty. The song was written as a composition by Basavappa Shastry who was the court poet of the Mysore Kingdom under Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar.

In 1881 in 1881, when the British took the decision to create Mysore as their state of princely status with Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar, the King entrusted the poet of the court to write an anthem of the state to celebrate the event.

Kayo Sri Gowri is composed in Raaga Dheerashankarabharanam (Carnatic) and Bilawal (Hindustani). The last charanas in the song were altered constantly, since the new King’s heir was elected to power.
